Designing high-impact presentations can be an essential factor in determining the success of your projects and/or business. When delivering presentations, one of the most important things is to capture the interest of the audience. Presentations are also useful for sharing information, explaining a topic or process, modelling a situation, showing results or promoting a brand. For example: when you present your business idea to potential partners or when you are trying to engage your customers. The first step is to follow a defined structure.

Steps to define the initial structure of a presentation

It is important to elaborate an initial structure where you consider: the volume of information you want to present, and the target audience for which the presentation is intended.

On the other hand, design a presentation that favours the anchoring process in the memory, including: an introduction or start; the development of details; a summary where the results and benefits are highlighted.

In order to create a dynamic presentation and capture the attention of your audience, follow the tips below:

  1. Synthesise and structure your presentation: you do not need to include all the information in writing, as this is not attractive to your audience and will make them lose interest. You can put concepts or key words, structuring it through enumerations or lists. It is also important that you add images as visual content is processed 60,000 times faster than text

  1. Adapt the fonts to the subject: the text must be legible to the naked eye. It is also important to use fonts that match your theme. To achieve a certain visual coherence, avoid choosing more than three different fonts as well as serif fonts.

  1. Choose the right colour according to the theme: the colours you are going to use should be adapted to the theme, tone and audience of your presentation. Getting the colour contrast right is important because it generates emotions, as well as helping you to classify and prioritise the content.

  1. Represent data through graphs: the simplest and most visual way to represent data is through graphs. For example: line graphs, column graphs, bar graphs, area graphs, pie charts, among others.

  1. Use timelines in your presentation: these are infographics that are designed to visualise data over specific periods. They can help you to reflect the process of your product, an evolutionary process or the development of the planning itself.

  1. Select suitable images to help convey the message: the images included should be homogeneous and follow the same aesthetics and style. To do this, you can consult free resource banks such as Freepik, Unsplash, Pexels and Pixabay

  1. Build a storytelling: it will help you to share your message in the form of a story with the intention of creating a connection with the audience.

  1. Check spelling and grammar: it is essential to gain and maintain the respect of your audience.

We know that there are many elements that we have to take into account to create an effective presentation, and that many times we do not have the inspiration or knowledge necessary to carry them out. For this reason, there are several tools that help us to create presentations that make an impact.

Tools to help you create presentations

The following examples will help you to create presentations in a simple and easily shareable way on social media:

  • PowerPoint: is one of the most widely used tools. This Microsoft programme has a large number of predefined templates and styles that you can modify to give your presentations a personal touch. It is also compatible with other Microsoft programmes and multiple file types. A mobile version is also available.

  • Canva: free, easy-to-use programme for creating images and designs. This multiplatform programme allows you to create different presentation templates and add multiple audiovisual elements (images, emoticons and animations). In addition, you can modify already created templates from the interface. All the designs can be exported in PDF, video or image. It has both a free version and a premium version.

  • Google Presentations: allows you to create presentations, share them with your team to be edited and even present them from anywhere. The advantage is that you don't need to install programmes or buy licences, but can use the platform from its online site. In addition, you can collaborate online, allowing several people to work on the same document at the same time.

  • Genial.ly: an online tool that allows you to create visual and interactive content quickly and easily. It also has multiple templates for editing. This software is designed for both individual and team use.
