State of the Digital Decade Report 2023
The European Union (EU) created the Digital Decade initiative in 2020 with the aim of making Europe a more digitally prosperous, fair, and inclusive economy and society. What is the Digital Decade Report?
The 2023 State of the Digital Decade Report is the first edition of this report, replacing DESI (Digital Economy and Society Index). It presents the most relevant indicators of the digital performance of European Union member countries. Its main objective is to provide a continuous monitoring and evaluation of the digital evolution of these states, which in turn helps to identify key areas that require improvement and adjustment on their path to digital transformation.
Meet the objectives of the Digital Decade
The Digital Decade is based on four axes:
- Digital empowerment: train the population and cultivate highly competent professionals in the digital world.
- Secure and sustainable digital infrastructure: building solid digital foundations that guarantee the security and sustainability of business operations.
- Digital business transformation: facilitating the transition of companies to a digital environment, enhancing their competitiveness and growth.
- Digitized public services: modernize and make public services more accessible through digitization.
What is the degree of digitalization of Spanish SMEs?
According to data from this report, 64% of the Spanish population has basic digital skills, in contrast to 54% of the European average.
About the digitization of Spanish companies, the percentage of SMEs that have at least a basic level of digital intensity is slightly below the European Union average, with 68% compared to 69% of the rest. And, in this sense, the report highlights digitalization initiatives such as the Kit Digital, Agents of Change or Acelera pyme indicating that they are promoting dynamism in the digitalization of small businesses.
In the area of e-commerce, there has been an increase in the proportion of SMEs making online sales, from 25% last year to 29% today, thus surpassing the European average of 19%. In addition, Spain is making positive progress in the adoption of advanced technologies by companies as 12.3% of them already use Artificial Intelligence and 14.3% use Big Data for internal analysis.
Within this context, Spanish SMEs play a particularly relevant role in the socioeconomic sphere, where almost 2.7 million of these companies, contributed 58% of the total value added -equivalent to 288,138 million euros-, and employed 8.5 million people, i.e., 68% of the total workforce in 2020. The adoption of digital technologies allows these companies to improve their operational efficiency, reduce costs and access new markets and customers among other benefits.
Digitalization is a challenge that Spanish SMEs are already facing, but one that they must continue to enhance to be competitive in the market and expand in the future. With training and support, they can take advantage of the opportunities offered by digital transformation and evolution.
